Initial Impressions: Dell XPS 13

Back at CES, we gave you the details on Dell’s first Ultrabook, theXPS 13. At the time, I said "it may be the best laptop Dell’s made in years," based on a very limited demonstration. Now I have the final production model in my hands, and I’m pleased to say my impression stands. The XPS 13 is by no means the perfect laptop, but my initial hands-on impression is extremely positive. A full review with benchmarks and a lot more hands-on use will be forthcoming, but I wanted to let you know what I think before the system goes on sale next week.

Lenovo ThinkPad T430u Ultrabook Announced

The Lenovo ThinkPad T430u ultrabook will arrive in the second half of 2012 and carry Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processor family along with nVidia graphics. Obviously this gives away the fact that the next “regular” (non-Ultrabook) ThinkPad T-series release will be the ThinkPad T430, Lenovo likes to attach letters to the end of their model series to denote a different design. For instance, the ThinkPad T420s represents a slim version of the currently sellingThinkPad T420.

Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook Specs Announced

The Acer Aspire S5, yet another ultrabook announced at CES 2012, only 0.59” thick will be the thinnest ultrabook on the market when it is released sometime in May. The ports on Aspire S5 are located on the back and they can slide open and closed using a powered mechanism. The case is made of a magnesium-aluminum alloy so it’s going to be fairly rugged despite its ultra-thin design. Full specs for the Aspire S5 are as follows:

Sony VAIO P Series VPC-P113KX

The good: Very small and lightweight; eye-catching design. The bad: Mediocre battery life; expensive; difficult to navigate. The bottom line: Sony's too-expensive, designer, ultramobile PC seems out of touch with today's more-affordable and usable smartphone, tablet, and Netbook offerings, with a package that doesn't best any of the competition. When we reviewed the first Vaio P in early 2009, we couldn't help but marvel at its minuscule size.

HP Envy 17 3D (Envy 17-2290NR) Review

The HP Envy 17 3D 2290NR is a stylish, 17.3” screen desktop replacement model that features an aluminum case design and Beats Audio. Inside the box you will find a sleek professional looking laptop without all the stickers you typically find on a Windows machine fresh out of the box. Call it taking a page out of the Apple playbook or just being customer friendly, either way it’s nice not to have to worry about removing stickers and glue remnants from a laptop you spent $1,500 on. The Envy 17 2290NR comes standard with an Intel Quad Core i7 processor and switchable graphics. The hybrid graphics makes it possible for this laptop to double as a gaming machine by using its high mid-range AMD graphics and also function as a battery friendly work machine by running on Intel integrated graphics when you need it to. The Envy 17-2290NR machine can be found on HP.com for $1,499.99. In my case I ordered a custom built model with the following configuration on my Employee Purchase Program for $1,466.21 before taxes, and free shipping:
